Sony is offering some US players up to $400 for their old PS5, two weeks before GTA 6 launches. The story comes from Génération NT, which describes a notification in the PlayStation mobile app that redirects to refurbished-device specialist Back Market.

According to Génération NT, US owners of an idle console receive an offer of a bank transfer of up to $400. That figure assumes a standard PS5 in perfect condition (Grade 0) with two DualSense controllers. A console with a single controller is still accepted, but the price drops depending on the model and whether it has a disc drive. Once the unit is shipped and checked, the money goes to the seller's bank account.
The outlet notes that Sony and Back Market have worked together since 2024, first to collect old PS4s in exchange for vouchers. Microsoft recently ran a similar e-mail campaign with Best Buy for idle Xbox Series X and S consoles.
Génération NT points to the price of new hardware: PS5 costs $599.99 for the Digital model, $649.99 with a drive and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro, amid a RAM shortage. Reselling an already assembled machine avoids building a new one. Sony's logic is mostly commercial: an idle console earns nothing, while an active player buys games on the PS Store and subscribes to PS Plus.

The timing is no accident. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella says the GTA 6 effect on new console sales has not shown up, as we reported in our piece on console stock.
So far the offer is reported only in the United States and by a single outlet, and we found no Sony statement. Nothing suggests it is coming to France. The $400 is a ceiling, not a guaranteed price. On eBay, per Génération NT, a PS5 with a drive and one controller sells for $450 to $500, but fees and shipping shrink the gap with Sony's payout.
For someone who only wants to play GTA 6 on November 19, refurbished hardware becomes a cheaper way in. For existing PS5 owners, preloading starts on November 10 and the game weighs up to 212 GB: see our release page.
