GTA 6 weapon wheel: Rockstar reworked it for years, Schreier says

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier says Rockstar tried menus, trays and even no interface before bringing the classic GTA 6 weapon wheel back.

Rockstar spent months, sometimes years, rebuilding how GTA 6 handles weapon selection, only to go back to the classic wheel. That is the account of Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier in a YouTube video posted on October 19, picked up by Dexerto and Polygon. These notes did not make it into his long feature on the game.

Why did Rockstar tinker with the weapon wheel for years?

According to Dexerto, summing up Schreier, the studio wanted to carry over an idea from Red Dead Redemption 2: limiting how many weapons a character carries. More realistic, but awkward for the classic wheel, which would have shown empty slots all the time. Rockstar reportedly tried alternative menus, tray systems, web-style selection and even no interface at all. Schreier says he spoke with Rob Nelson, one of the studio's development leads.

The outcome is the opposite of a revolution: the traditional wheel, visible in footage of the game, came back. Dexerto adds that the 2019 to 2022 period lacked clear direction and saw prototypes dropped, and that some staff reportedly left. Things improved in late 2022 and early 2023. This is a journalist's account, not a Rockstar confirmation.

What is said about GTA 6's hidden details?

The other anecdote concerns an old debate: the much-discussed anatomy of Arthur Morgan's horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, whose physics seemed to change with the weather. Polygon reports that Schreier says the detail is real, was never on the production schedule and was added by a developer on their own initiative. He sees it as the mark of a studio with time and money: "I think there are going to be a lot of details like that within this game," he says, per Polygon.

The same spirit already shows in what we have seen of GTA 6: mud physics and dense NPC dialogue. For the scale of the project, see our piece on Rockstar's 4,700 employees.

Why it matters

Nothing changes for November 19, and nothing is confirmed about content: the GTA V style weapon wheel survives, with a tighter inventory according to Dexerto, which remains to be checked with a controller in hand. The real lesson is elsewhere. The game was built through trial and abandonment, and invisible details matter as much as headline mechanics. Players will judge it from the release on.
