GTA 6: Rockstar's marketing plan is estimated at $500 million, says The Media Leader

The Media Leader puts GTA 6's media plan at around $500 million even though the game arguably doesn't need it; Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stands by the spending.

Why pay for attention you already get for free? That question opens an analysis by The Media Leader, written by Matthieu Lamoureux, author of the advertising blog LLLLITL. The outlet puts Rockstar Games' media plan at roughly $500 million.

Where does the $500 million figure come from?

From the author's own estimate, not from Rockstar or Take-Two. The Media Leader describes a fairly classic mix of channels: giant billboards, press and influencer relations, collaborations with artists and athletes, merchandising, limited editions. What is not classic, it writes, is the scale and how the activations complement each other.

The piece also quotes analyst projections: development costs around $1.5 billion and about 25 million copies at launch. At $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for Ultimate, that would mean $2 billion in gross revenue within 24 hours. Those are analyst assumptions, not sales. The firmest number remains digital pre-orders, covered in our piece on 6.45 million pre-orders.

Does Take-Two stand by the spending?

Yes, and Strauss Zelnick has said so more than once, per The Media Leader. In May 2026, asked by investors whether marketing was needed: "The answer is obviously yes, we need to promote it," promising a "very large" campaign. In September he pointed to the Barbie film: a well-known property, a campaign everywhere, "and by the way, it worked."

The outlet also describes bridges between game and real world: ten murals painted at Wynwood Walls that will appear in the game, Vice City cars on Miami streets, in-universe ads. We covered part of this in the piece on the fake Miami ads.

Why it matters

Nothing concrete changes for players: no date, price or edition moves, and it all stays on our price page. But the analysis offers a reading key. Rockstar is not just selling a game, it is staging a cultural event, which is why the campaign keeps going for the year's most anticipated release. The amount, again, is an outside estimate.
