The ShinyHunters group has lost another member. According to Polygon, the FBI announced Friday the arrest in Pennsylvania of a suspect tied to the September hack of the agency. The man's name and the exact charges have not been released. The same collective also attacked Rockstar, which is why this concerns us.

What we know about the arrest

Polygon cites New York Times sources calling the suspect a "primary co-conspirator" in the FBI hack, in which personal data on current and former employees, and on applicants, was stolen. The arrest follows that of one of the group's leaders, taken into custody last month by Dutch police. FBI director Kash Patel said the agency would keep working with partners "to disrupt what's left of the ShinyHunters group and their associates, no matter where they operate".

The Rockstar connection

In April, ShinyHunters targeted the studio. After failing to obtain a ransom, the group released financial information, revealing, Polygon writes, how much money games like GTA Online make. The outlet adds that Rockstar met that hack with little more than a shrug. For players, nothing in those documents touches the game's content.

FBI cyber division assistant director Brett Leatherman has said the group extorted over $70 million after breaching more than 140 institutions since last year, Polygon recalls. Victims named this year include GrubHub, the European Commission, JCPenney and Carnival Cruise.

Keeping the cases apart

Polygon separates this case from the August gameplay leaks. Those were released by a different actor, Cyberleek, before the extended look on Netflix, and the latest video dates from this week. Rockstar called the leaks "heartbreaking for our team" and "obviously not how we intended for you to see the game", in a statement we covered here. Nothing publicly links the two cases.

Why it matters

For the November 19 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, nothing. But the legal net is tightening around a group that hit the studio, and proceedings could one day detail the April intrusion. For prices and editions, see our price page.
