In an interview with LOVE, Rockstar's Rupert Humphries explains what drives Jason to crime and Raul's role. A GTA about paying the bills more than buying yachts.

GTA 6's American Dream comes down to one line from Rockstar: a house for your family and your loans paid off. GAMINGbible reports it, quoting Rupert Humphries, the studio's Senior Vice President of Narrative, in an interview with LOVE Magazine. Xboxygen draws a portrait of Jason as a bank robber and Raul as a mentor.
We have already covered the political satire in that interview. These two reports detail another side of it: what really pushes Jason and Lucia into crime.
Asked how the idea has changed since earlier games, Humphries says, per GAMINGbible: "Maybe the American Dream is more modest now. It's a house for your family and your loans paid off instead of wild success—but maybe today, that's just as out of reach for the average person."
The outlet sets it against past entries: Roman Bellic selling Niko a glamorous life in GTA IV, and GTA V's three leads chasing wealth or a criminal empire. That reading is GAMINGbible's, not Rockstar's, but it fits what the trailers already suggested.

On Jason, Humphries is blunter. GAMINGbible quotes him saying the character takes his measures, drug trafficking and bank robbery included, "because of his material circumstances". Xboxygen adds that Rockstar does not want a simple moral reading: the player decides whether Jason acts out of need or because that life suits him. The interview even floats the idea that he is "wired differently", without settling it.
Lucia is the one pushing forward and Jason the brake, according to Xboxygen.
The genuinely new detail is Raul. Rockstar introduced him in May 2025 as an experienced bank robber. Xboxygen reports the studio wanted a fairly young, inexperienced couple whose escape rests on a kind of naivety, so it needed an older figure to move them up a level. Raul would bring his knowledge of Vice City and the local underworld and lead them into the big scores.

Xboxygen also notes that Rockstar says it did its research in Florida with police officers and gang members, which matches our earlier piece on the fieldwork in Orlando. On politics, the studio avoids real figures and events, which age badly over a long development, and exaggerates lasting phenomena instead: conspiracy theories, culture wars, outsized public reactions.
Nothing changes for the date or the price. But the tone is clearer: a GTA where crime answers tight finances rather than a hunger for luxury. Whether the writing keeps that promise across the whole game, and how the player is asked to judge Jason, remains to be seen. Answer on 19 November, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
