ActuGaming and Dexerto report that Strauss Zelnick defended the delays and alluded to Cyberpunk 2077 without naming it.

Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick has explained why delaying GTA 6 was preferable to following a schedule at any cost, according to ActuGaming, reporting on his Wall Street Journal interview. He referred to a major game that shipped and then had to be withdrawn because it did not work properly. Dexerto.fr also interprets this as a reference to Cyberpunk 2077, although Zelnick did not name the title in the reported passage.

ActuGaming reports that Zelnick described an uncomfortable decision involving extra time, additional resources and creative ambitions. According to its account, the request arrived shortly after a board seminar, making the timing unwelcome. That initial reaction is part of his explanation of the decision, rather than evidence that Rockstar was ultimately refused the time it requested.
The publication also recounts his comparison with film reshoots. Giving a production more time requires additional spending, but protecting a deadline can carry its own consequences. His argument concerns how a publisher balances those pressures. The reported remarks do not quantify the technical improvements made during the extra development period or identify specific features added as a result.
Not in the remarks reproduced by the two publications. ActuGaming and Dexerto identify the example from his description of a major release that was subsequently withdrawn because it did not function properly. That distinction matters: the game name is the outlets’ interpretation of his allusion. His broader point is that becoming dependent on a calendar can undermine the quality goals a company says it follows.

The interview is not an announcement of another delay. Dexerto reiterates that GTA 6 is expected on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our release date guide keeps that practical information together. Commentary on earlier scheduling decisions should be read separately from any future announcement about availability, and no PC edition has been announced in this context.
The remarks add a clearer account of why Take-Two believed waiting was justified, even when approving more development time was inconvenient. They do not independently establish how GTA 6 will perform on either console at release. An executive’s reasoning cannot substitute for performance demonstrations or hands-on testing. For players, the news is an explanation of the publisher’s past choices, rather than a fresh frame-rate promise or a change to the announced launch date. The remaining questions about the finished game still require evidence from the finished game itself.
