212 GB per player, millions of players: the question is bound to come up for network operators. TechRadar put it to NBN Co, which runs Australia's broadband network, and it says it is confident. "We've planned for major download events like this," a spokesperson said.

A 32.91 Tbps precedent

NBN Co points to a game release last year that coincided with a record 32.91 terabits per second, about 30% above baseline, with almost 8 Tbps of extra demand in the busiest hour. It does not name the game. It adds that GTA VI could set a new record for total download volume across its 7 to 8 day launch period.

Preloading spreads the load

NBN Co says traffic now builds earlier in the day rather than spiking when people get home, because it works with distributors to spread downloads. For GTA VI, preloading opens on November 10 for digital purchases and November 12 for the boxed version, as covered in our piece on the preload moved up to November 10. "Preloading is good news for gamers and good news for the network," NBN Co said.

Why it matters

Nothing new from Rockstar: size and dates are known. But it is the first time a national operator details its preparation. The unlock time is still unannounced and will decide whether everyone launches at once. The figures are Australian; no other operator appears to have published its own. Pricing and editions are on the price page.
