According to Le Parisien, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2 and online roleplay kept the series alive through the thirteen years between GTA 5 and GTA 6.

Thirteen years between GTA 5 and GTA 6, and the series never faded. Le Parisien explains on Sunday how Rockstar kept its players: another big game, an online mode that never stops, and a roleplay community. The paper notes the release is set for November 19, 2026.

According to Le Parisien, the first asset is that Rockstar does not only make GTA. Red Dead Redemption 2 took most of the teams between 2013 and the start of GTA 6 production in 2018. The paper credits it with almost 90 million copies, behind GTA 5, which it puts above 230 million, the second best-selling game ever after Minecraft.
The second asset is GTA Online. The paper describes a shaky launch with performance and network problems, then a game improved and fed with content through 2026. It sees a "live service", a platform where players keep spending. No official figure exists, but the analyses cited estimate GTA 5 earned $10 billion, half from sales, half from GTA Online.
Last point: "RP", roleplay. Le Parisien compares it to improv theatre on online servers, hugely popular on social media. Aaron Garbut touched on it in Edge, which we covered in this article.

Nothing changes in the game itself, but the piece helps read the launch: Rockstar expects a comeback, not a revival. One unknown the paper does not settle: what happens to GTA Online once GTA 6 arrives, as no online mode has been detailed. See also our piece on controversy as a brand.
