Per La Crème Du Gaming, drawing on Edge, some GTA 6 missions stay locked until you have enough money or have waited; Rockstar has not detailed the system.

In GTA 6, you will sometimes need to earn money before the next story mission unlocks. That is what French outlet La Crème Du Gaming reports, building on Edge issue 430, relayed by GamesRadar+ and detailed by Insider Gaming. Rockstar has not published a dedicated statement: the information comes from this press coverage.

The clearest quote is credited to Rob Nelson, co-director at Rockstar North, speaking to IGN: "there will be moments where you need to earn money to progress missions". According to La Crème Du Gaming, Insider Gaming describes "small blocks" that make you wait a while or raise funds. "Natural gating" is the press's phrase, not a Rockstar term.
In practice, some main missions would stay locked until Jason and Lucia reach a cash threshold. Store and gas station robberies, small banks, gang hideouts: these activities would feed the story directly.
Per the same source, money exists in two places: cash carried by the character and a bank account. Carried cash is lost on death or arrest, so a failed heist can push back the next mission. The in-game WAINK phone app would also list wanted car models for a fence, with their security and tracking systems, and the payout would depend on the vehicle's condition.

This extends what we covered on Edge's "criminal profile" and the Scooter Brothers app: the open world is no longer just a backdrop between cutscenes.
Yes, but not in one sitting. La Crème Du Gaming writes that you can still prioritise the main plot, at the cost of mandatory detours. In GTA IV, GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2, most missions could be chained without financial constraints. Speedrunners would need money-farming routes in their first any% runs, per the same source.
Still unknown: exact amounts, how often these blocks occur and how long waits last. Rockstar has given no figures. The date does not move: November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, preload on November 12 (see our release page).
For players, it promises pacing: the story would be tied to time spent in Leonida rather than a mission marathon. For length, it is also a lever, in line with the 80 hours mentioned by Rob Nelson. Whether the balance feels immersive or frustrating is unknown until launch. Until Rockstar details the system, read it as a principle, not a written rule.
