GTA 6: Mat Piscatella questions fears over competing release dates

The Circana analyst argues that other games still have an audience. Moving away from Rockstar can also make alternative release windows more crowded.

Mat Piscatella thinks developers have overestimated the danger of launching close to GTA 6, according to GamesRadar+. Speaking to GamesBeat in an interview published on October 23, Circana's games lead argued that a huge Rockstar release does not remove the audience for everything else. With November approaching, his point offers a useful way to read the industry's crowded release calendar: attention may concentrate on one game without every player making the same choice.

A large launch does not mean one audience

As reported by GamesRadar+, Piscatella's argument starts with console owners rather than the scale of Rockstar's marketing. People who own a PS5 or an Xbox Series console do not all want the same experience. Some will buy GTA 6 immediately, while others will spend their money and evenings elsewhere. His comments describe that variety; they are not a numerical forecast for Rockstar's opening sales.

He identifies cozy games, life simulations and shooters as examples of experiences that can still find interested players. He also points to the Switch audience, which has no announced version of GTA 6 to buy. PC players are another relevant group: Rockstar has not announced a PC release. A missing version leaves those players with their own release calendar, rather than automatically turning November into an empty month.

Moving away can create another traffic jam

There is a scheduling problem on the other side of the decision, too. GTA BOOM, covering the same interview, highlights Piscatella's view that publishers moving away from Rockstar can crowd other release windows. A quieter-looking date is less attractive when several companies choose it together. Avoiding one enormous competitor does not guarantee avoiding competition altogether.

That does not establish why any particular developer postponed a game. Production needs, feedback and unfinished systems can determine a release date independently of GTA 6. Piscatella is offering a market assessment, not access to every studio's internal planning. Nor does his argument promise that a small release will receive enough attention simply because its audience differs from Rockstar's.

Why it matters

For players following the GTA 6 launch, the practical consequence is that other November games remain worth watching. Waiting for Leonida does not require clearing every other experience from the calendar. For developers, Piscatella's reasoning puts the intended audience back at the centre of scheduling: genre, platform and player habits offer more useful distinctions than a blanket fear of Rockstar. Whether that approach succeeds will be measured through actual purchases and play, rather than the number of companies that changed their plans beforehand.
