GTA VI is set to include over 170 species, 60 of them birds, spread across habitats with rare and legendary animals, Rotek details.

GTA VI will feature more than 170 animal species, including over 60 birds and over 30 land mammals, according to Rotek, which relies on remarks by Rockstar's vice president of dynamic art, Michael Kane. The site calls it the richest wildlife of any Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption 2 included.

Rockstar wants to reproduce Florida's animal diversity in every biome: cities, countryside, wetlands, swamps, coast and ocean. Rotek details the habitats. The Grassrivers-inspired swamps hold alligators, pink flamingos, herons and aquatic life. Mount Kalaga National Park is tied to deer, Florida panthers and foxes. Vice City has dogs, cats, iguanas, raccoons, pigeons and gulls, with the occasional alligator in a pool or near a shop.
Rotek's list is incomplete and says so: it is built from trailers, official screenshots and details found elsewhere.
Rockstar sorts wildlife into three categories: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Some animals can be hunted, and the identity of the legendary creatures is kept secret. One screenshot shows Jason Duval armed near deer. Fishing seems planned around Mount Kalaga, on a catch-and-release basis: the fish goes back in the water, it is not sold or eaten.

Rotek also says mammal fur is fully simulated: it can get wet, dirty, clumped or tangled, with colour and pattern variations within a species. In the Extended Look, Jason can approach a dog and choose to pet it, scold it or study it.
GTA V already had deer, coyotes, boars, sharks and dogs, but their role stayed limited, mostly tied to missions or small challenges. The scale changes here. Rockstar's field work in Florida is covered in our article on the Miami scouting, and the game's other protagonist is profiled in our Lucia Caminos profile. For the setting, see the release page.
For the first time at Rockstar, wildlife becomes a system rather than scenery: habitats, rarity tiers, fishing, simulated fur. How it plays is the open question: Rotek describes intentions and images, not hands-on time. The game launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that is when we will know whether 170 species really change exploration.
