A hacker paid $50,000 by Sony for a PS5 hypervisor flaw is blamed by part of the community for closing the door on GTA 6 piracy, Kotaku reports.

Pirating GTA 6 on PS5 on release day may not happen, and part of the homebrew scene is looking for someone to blame. Kotaku tells the story of 2tonejordy, a PlayStation hacker who announced on X on October 14 that Sony had paid him $50,000 for a hypervisor exploit reported through the HackerOne bug bounty site.

A hypervisor exploit generally gives access to a console at the hardware level, which is the classic entry point for piracy. Kotaku writes that, because it was reported on October 14, it cannot be used to pirate GTA VI on November 19, the site reasons. Jordy's post, “I can at least buy GTA 6 with this I think,” set the comments on fire: “You took GTA 6 away from everyone, and then you show up with $50,000,” one user wrote, as quoted by the site.
The picture is more nuanced. According to Kotaku, Jordy first kept quiet because the flaw had been uncovered before him by another well-known name, Andy “theflow0” Nguyen, who asked him not to report it. He agreed. A few hours later someone else found it with the help of AI, and he decided to file it.
Not necessarily. This specific flaw has been reported, but other leads exist: we covered the Prolapse jailbreak aimed at firmwares 14.00 and 14.10, whose effectiveness is still to be shown. Kotaku also describes a homebrew scene in turmoil, where AI is used to reverse-engineer and open-source results, which divides the community.

What we do not know: whether Sony has already shipped the fix to every console, and which system version will be required at launch. Jordy says nothing more.
For players, nothing to do except buy the game legally. For Sony, it shows that paying researchers before the year's biggest release makes sense. The buying timeline, from the November 12 preload to the November 19 launch, is on the release page.
