Gameshop Twente in the Netherlands will not sell GTA 6 since the box contains only a download code, Gamekult reports.

A Dutch shop, Gameshop Twente, refuses to sell GTA 6 because the "physical edition" is only a box with a download code. According to Gamekult, which quotes store employee Floran Gelderman: "As long as it is only a code in a box, we are boycotting this release."

Rockstar has confirmed that no disc will be pressed: the box holds a code and nothing else. For Gameshop Twente, which focuses on discs, cartridges and retro gaming, that falls outside what it has defended for years. "We do not want to sell a download code to our customers as a physical product," Gelderman says, as quoted by Gamekult.
The choice has a cost, which Gamekult spells out: skipping GTA 6 means giving up revenue that most stores consider essential.
The seller describes a deeper trend: the shop now sells only a limited number of physical Xbox titles, and Nintendo sells more and more "codes in boxes". Gamekult writes that Sony would follow for good from 2028; we relay that as reported, with no confirmation of our own. For Gelderman, if owning a game depends on a publisher's servers, "you no longer fully own the game".

The same piece notes that Micromania in France is reinventing itself: merchandise with Zing, retro games, and a sale by Gamestop to a French-Quebec consortium. What happens to French store pre-orders is covered in our article on the looted Micromania stores, and prices at French retailers in our price comparison for France.
The facts are simple. GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at 79.99 euros for the standard edition and 99.99 euros for the Ultimate, digital only. The box sold in stores holds a code. All prices are on the price page.
One shop in the Netherlands is not a movement. Nothing suggests others will follow, and Gamekult names none. But the case shows the unease of specialist retailers over a game whose box has become packaging for a code. For players nothing changes: buying in store or online gets the same game, with the same pre-load on November 12.
