In what order do the GTA games take place? Journal du Geek has published the franchise's official timeline weeks before launch. GTA 6 will be the series' 18th game, and while its exact year is unknown, it is set in the present day.
According to Journal du Geek, GTA London 1961 and GTA London 1969, two expansions of the first GTA released in 1999 (the first on PC only). They are also the only entries set outside America. Then comes a fifteen-year jump: GTA Vice City Stories in 1984 with Vic Vance, then GTA Vice City in 1986, which opens with Vic's death and follows Tommy Vercetti. For fans of the coastal city, it's the best warm-up for Leonida.
San Andreas follows in 1992, folding in the Los Angeles riots. The first GTA is set in 1997, Liberty City Stories in 1998, GTA Advance in 2000, then GTA III in 2001, ninth in order per the outlet. GTA 5's prologue is dated 2004, GTA 4 and its two expansions 2008, Chinatown Wars 2009, GTA Online 2012. In 2013 the GTA 5 and GTA Online timelines cross, and that is also the year of GTA 2, the one game set in the future when it launched in 1999.
This is the timeline as given by Journal du Geek; to our knowledge Rockstar has not republished a chart for GTA 6.
