GTA 6 launch: Activision names Call of Duty and GTA 6 as the year's two biggest games

When you sell Call of Duty, you don't fight GTA 6, you ride it. According to Gameblog, Activision marketing director Tyler Bahl told The Game Business: "Without wanting to offend Zelda, GTA 6 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 are the two biggest games of the year."

What exactly did Activision say?

November is unusual. Gameblog notes that most publishers avoided the month to dodge Rockstar, while Nintendo went the other way and dated The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake for November 5, two weeks before GTA 6 on November 19. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.

Bahl's reasoning is arithmetic: if GTA 6 gets people to "dust off their Xbox or PlayStation", Call of Duty's potential audience grows. He adds that the series lasts because of its community and social side. Modern Warfare 4 is multiplatform, with a Switch 2 version on day one, which Gameblog says the Zelda remake lacks.

Activision is eyeing open worlds too

The same day, Gamewave reports that Activision is building an open-world game at Elsewhere, a new studio staffed with veterans of CD Projekt Red and Naughty Dog. A job listing for an assistant animation director mentions "emergent gameplay", the systemic approach GTA is known for. Gamewave stresses that Elsewhere isn't necessarily trying to beat Rockstar. No title or date has been announced.

What we don't know is whether the two stories are linked. Neither source connects them, and Bahl's interview is only about Call of Duty.

Why it matters

Nothing concrete for players before November 19, but the signal is clear: a direct rival is betting on GTA 6's pull rather than dodging it. Release details stay on the release page.
