A week before GTA 6 launches, French public television is offering a catch-up session. According to Rotek, France.tv and France 4 are releasing "GTA, le jeu no limit" ("GTA, the no-limit game"), an original documentary narrated by Fadily Camara, already free to watch on France.tv until April 9, 2029.

When and where can you watch it?

The film runs 52 minutes. It is available now on France.tv, and France 4 will broadcast it on Thursday, November 12 at 10:40 p.m. French time, the day GTA 6 preloading opens on consoles. The timing is unlikely to be an accident.

Who appears in it?

Per Rotek, the film's strength is its witnesses. Keith Hamilton, Paul Farley and Gary Penn, three pioneers of Scottish studio DMA Design, which made the first Grand Theft Auto, are interviewed. So is Jamie King, a Rockstar Games co-founder alongside Dan and Sam Houser.

The synopsis quoted by the site describes a series that went from "pariah rejected by politicians and the media" to an iconic work. The film covers the controversies, including Hot Coffee and accusations of anti-police propaganda, then the influence of Martin Scorsese's films, funk and American rap.

Where it falls short

Rotek is blunt: if you already know Rockstar's history you will learn little, and 52 minutes is short for three decades. The site also objects to generative AI tools used for some visuals, such as GTA-style portraits and album covers illustrating the game's music, which it calls "sometimes quite ugly".

Nothing Rotek reports concerns GTA 6 itself. This is a film about the series, not a making-of. For the soundtrack, see our music page.

Why it matters

Nothing for the game, plenty for the mood. A free documentary on a public channel a week before launch shows GTA 6 is now a mainstream subject. And if you need something to play meanwhile, see which GTA to start with.
