The $1 billion productivity loss on GTA 6 launch day rests on a shaky calculation: 1.5 million absentees would cost about $420 million.

One figure has been going around for a week: on November 19, GTA 6 launch day, 1.5 million Americans would book a day off or call in sick, costing $1 billion in lost productivity. HotHardware and NME repeat it as is. La Crème du Gaming redid the math, and it does not hold up.

According to La Crème du Gaming, the estimate comes from Barcelona economist José García Montalvo, quoted by the International Business Times. His reasoning: about 1.5 million American workers, mostly men aged 18 to 30 in tech, would take the day. With average output of $70,000 a year per worker, or roughly $280 a day, that means a drop of about 2% in national output that day. The Wall Street Journal picked it up, then the international press.
The backdrop is real. NME recalls that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick himself said "a lot of people will be calling in sick on November 19." HotHardware adds that, per the Wall Street Journal, workers have saved paid time off for the date and some companies built a launch-day leave into year-end packages. At Fort Stewart, the US Army's 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion even offers soldiers a four-day pass when they reenlist so they can play uninterrupted.
No, says La Crème du Gaming, relying on a recalculation by RadarGaming. 1.5 million absentees at $280 a day come to about $420 million, not a billion. Reaching $1 billion would take more than 3.5 million absent workers. No detailed study backs the figure, which remains a high-end order of magnitude. For comparison, the consultancy Challenger, Gray and Christmas puts lost productivity on the Monday after the Super Bowl at more than $4 billion, with a transparent method.

Precedent supports the phenomenon without quantifying it. According to HotHardware, an IGN survey of 11,000 readers in 2013 found 46% planned to free up time for GTA V, and nearly 20% planned to call in sick. On the business side, La Crème du Gaming cites California retailer Burger Motorsports, which warned customers of shipping delays around the launch because several employees asked for the day off.
No crash is coming. Absenteeism on November 19 will probably show in offices, but the $1 billion is a fragile estimate, not a fact. The other side of the ledger is firmer: 6.45 million digital preorders worth about $630 million according to Sensor Tower, and up to $4.5 billion expected in the first week according to Newzoo, quoted by NME. We have already followed the leave question and Newzoo's projections. For the full calendar, the release page remains the reference: the game launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the unlock time is still unknown.
