Justice is finally talking about its work for Rockstar. In a BBC Radio 1 interview that World Is Small summarised on Wednesday, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay describe what it is like to score the most anticipated game of the decade. Their answer: from a distance.

How do you compose when everyone is waiting?

"We are obviously aware of the excitement around the game and the fact that people have been waiting for it for a very long time," Augé says, as quoted by World Is Small. He compares GTA 6 to a colossus on its way, and says Justice tries to look at it with some distance. The aim is to keep outside pressure from steering the music and to stay true to the duo's own world.

The 80s, but not by design

The first excerpts hint at 1980s influences. Yet according to Augé, "we never really told ourselves we had to make an 80s track": the colour emerged during composition, with sounds that stay modern. He mentions a part that sounds like a guitar but was built with a synthesizer, with phasing effects and a futuristic quality a real guitar could not give.

The first taste of that direction is Flower in a Hurricane, featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard alongside Justice. World Is Small reports 2.8 million YouTube plays in under a week. Xavier de Rosnay says these are artists the duo had long wanted to work with, and that the collaboration built up gradually.

What we already know about the game's music

We covered Justice's role in the soundtrack earlier this month; this interview adds method, not a new tracklist. The album GTA VI: The Album has 34 tracks and arrives on November 19 with the game, and several radio stations are confirmed: see our music page.

Why it matters

Nothing changes for the schedule, but the tone is clearer: a Justice-style score with the 80s suggested rather than copied. Still unknown: which scenes carry their music, and whether more tracks will be revealed before launch.
