GTA 6: GTA V already leaked via the PlayStation Store in 2013, Polygon recalls

Polygon recalls that before GTA V's launch a PlayStation Store error opened game files to pre-orders, then the finished game was pirated: a precedent for Cyberleek's threat.

GTA 6 leaks are not the first such ordeal for Rockstar, Polygon recalls in a look back at 2013. A few weeks before GTA V launched, a PlayStation Store snafu let pre-order holders access some of the game's files.

What happened with GTA V?

At first it seemed minor, Polygon writes: the files showed how much space the game would use on a PS3 hard drive and listed songs from the soundtrack. Strategy guides also showed the map early. Rockstar said it was "deeply disappointed by leaks and spoilers" in a blog post ahead of the September 17 launch. Sony pulled the preload and apologized to fans and Rockstar.

It got worse: players shared story and ending details, and Rockstar and Sony warned that spoiling could get them banned. The game was then uploaded to torrent sites, letting people with jailbroken consoles play it without paying.

How is 2026 different?

Polygon points out the gap. In 2013 the leaked game was, as far as anyone could tell, the finished experience, pirated fairly close to launch. The GTA 6 build Cyberleek claims to hold may be an old one with dev tools. The outlet also notes Rockstar does not plan a physical disc for GTA 6 and that it is unclear whether a PC version would only be streamable. Those are Polygon's readings, not publisher announcements.

Where things stand: Cyberleek threatened a build release, then announced the end of its leaks, as we reported here and there. Preload details are in our piece on the unlock time, and the release page holds the calendar: preload November 12, launch November 19.

Why it matters

Nothing new about the game, but a useful marker: risks around digital pre-orders and preloaded files have existed for years. GTA 6's unlock time is still unknown, and that is exactly the detail Rockstar and platform holders guard closely.
