GeeksLands calculates that GTA 6 needs to sell 20 to 50 million copies to cover its budget, and Newzoo's central forecast of 51 million in launch week would be enough.

How many copies does GTA 6 need to sell to turn a profit? Between 20 and 50 million, according to a calculation by GeeksLands based on the 79.99 euro price, the cut taken by the Sony and Microsoft stores and the cost assumptions in circulation. The range is wide because neither Rockstar nor Take-Two publishes the budget.

Newzoo projects 37 million cumulative sales by the end of launch week in its low scenario and 51 million in its central one, pre-orders included. GeeksLands reports that the central scenario would repay a two billion dollar budget within launch week from November 19. The low scenario would cover a one billion budget, or 1.5 billion depending on the formula. Beyond that, break-even depends on later weeks, which Newzoo does not quantify. See our earlier pieces on Newzoo's projections and Sensor Tower's 6 million pre-order estimate.
Very little. Jennifer Kolbe, who runs publishing at Rockstar, declined to give Bloomberg a figure, per GeeksLands. She only denied that development cost more than 1.5 billion dollars, a figure compared to the Burj Khalifa in a rumor. Jason Schreier considers GTA 6 almost certainly the most expensive video game ever made. The two billion and three billion plus figures come from rumors and fans adding up salaries: estimates, not data.
Official filings give the scale. Rockstar Games UK declared 363 million pounds in staff costs for the year to March 2025, for 1,744 employees on average, against 404 million a year earlier. That covers GTA Online too. And on March 31, 2026, Take-Two carried 2.15 billion dollars of capitalized development costs for unreleased games, across all projects and without marketing.

The shelf price includes VAT. In France, the 79.99 euro Standard edition is 66.66 euros before tax. Microsoft admitted in 2021 that it takes 30% on its store, and Sony's identical rate is challenged by a class action in London, GeeksLands writes. At 30%, a digital copy sold in France leaves about 46.66 euros to Take-Two, and 58.33 for the 99.99 euro Ultimate Edition. None of the three companies says whether Take-Two negotiated a lower rate.
Boxes are murkier: they only hold a download code and drop to 60 euros at E.Leclerc, with the retailer's share unknown. These are orders of magnitude. Our price page lists the confirmed tariffs.
Nothing changes for your pre-order, but 20 million gives a benchmark: below it the game would struggle to cover its costs, above 50 million the question disappears. Take-Two reports quarterly results on November 9, ten days before launch, and may offer real figures. Until then, everything is an estimate.
