Polygon reports GTA 6 will not address Donald Trump or the pandemic directly. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson wants satire that does not date.

No Donald Trump and no COVID-19 in GTA 6, at least not head-on. That is what Polygon reports from the recent previews, in which Rockstar North's leaders explain how the studio picks what it makes fun of.
Speaking to The New York Times this summer, Rockstar North studio head Rob Nelson gave the main reason: "We run the risk of dating ourselves in a sort of awkward way," so the team looks for what has a timeless quality. Polygon also quotes a second preview, on IGN, where he says the studio works on very long cycles, "not a TV show coming out every week", and must avoid satire that feels dated "in a weird way".
The clearest line comes last: broad themes are fine, but "very specific political issues or memes will date fast". Thirteen years separate GTA V from GTA 6, which explains the reflex. A joke about 2024 headlines would already be stale by the November 19 release.
Not entirely, Polygon adds. The outlet thinks the studio may slip in oblique nods to the rise of conspiracy theories in current culture, a way of brushing against Trump and the pandemic without naming them. That is the writer's reading, not a Rockstar announcement.

The trailers have already drawn on internet culture. Polygon points to an apparent wink at the "Florida Joker" and a few viral TikTok clips. So the studio does not ban current references, it avoids tying itself to one precise event. Nelson stresses the effort to keep a "timeless" tone, down to avoiding contemporary slang.
For players, it signals tone: a caricatured Florida, influencers and scammers, but no dated news commentary. It fits what Rockstar said about its working method in our Phil Hooker story. We do not yet know which winks will survive launch. Our release page keeps the schedule up to date.
