Why is GTA 6 coming out on November 19, 2026, thirteen years after GTA V? Because Rockstar had to shelve the project for years to finish Red Dead Redemption 2, then a pandemic, a major departure and a doubled headcount pushed the schedule back, according to SVG, drawing on Bloomberg's report.

Why didn't GTA 6 launch sooner?

The original plan was to build GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2 side by side. It didn't hold. IGN France reports, citing Bloomberg, that Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson acknowledged RDR2 needed all the studio's resources, so GTA 6 was put on the back burner, with the expectation that Red Dead's work would "pay off" later.

The project was then called "Project Americas". Gameblog says it aimed to cover North and South America before being refocused on the Miami area, now Leonida. Bloomberg doesn't say why. Our full breakdown of the Bloomberg report covers the rest.

What else slowed development down?

SVG lists three factors noted by Jason Schreier. Covid in 2020 reportedly cost at least a year, by his estimate. Dan Houser's departure left Rob Nelson, Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut sharing development leadership, with no single decision-maker. And Rockstar grew from 2,441 employees in 2018 to 4,711: more hands, but slower coordination between studios.

How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?

Twice, per SVG: first aimed at 2025, then May 2026, before the current November 19, 2026 date. Official details are on our release page. SVG considers a third delay unlikely while noting nothing is 100% certain until the game reaches players. That is SVG's reading, not a Rockstar guarantee.

Why it matters

For players the calendar doesn't change: preload on November 12, launch on the 19th on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The takeaway is that each delay refocused the project: the map is more compact than in early plans, but Rockstar calls it its biggest and most alive yet. Still unknown: the exact cost of these delays, which Rockstar doesn't disclose.
