GTA 6 can compete for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026, and it makes the cut by a single day. According to IGN, the show's FAQ sets the eligibility deadline at Friday, November 20, 2026, and Rockstar's game launches on November 19.
Insider Gaming quotes the official text: games must be commercially available on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. For the Players' Voice category, games must ship by November 30. VICE adds that the ceremony takes place on December 10.
The November 19 launch, staggered across time zones, falls inside the window. The exact unlock time is still unknown, but it does not affect eligibility: even a late unlock on the 19th leaves more than a day before the cutoff.
In September, the late-year date made players wonder. According to VICE, the debate went viral after industry veteran Alannah Pearce asked whether the game would make the show. Fans remembered years when a late release complicated the race.

Eligible does not mean nominated. Nominations have not been announced and a jury votes. IGN notes it would be surprising for GTA 6 to miss most of the categories it qualifies for, and recalls Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's record of nine wins last year. Insider Gaming lists the 2026 rivals, from Resident Evil Requiem to Control Resonant and Forza Horizon 6.
The game will be judged on reviews published before December 10. As we reported, reviews are expected before November 19, which should give jurors time to play. IGN also notes that the multiplayer expansion, reportedly due next year, could give the game a second shot in 2027.
Nothing changes for the release date, but a year-end fight is taking shape: the most anticipated game of the decade will be judged in the same season as everything else. For Rockstar, it is one more bit of pressure. The full calendar is on our release page.
