GTA 6 is rated PEGI 18, but nothing bans selling it to minors in France

Per 20 Minutes and BFMTV, PEGI 18 has no force of law in France: in shops, the seller decides. Online, the filter is tighter.

GTA 6's PEGI 18 rating does not keep teenagers out of French shops. 20 Minutes, building on a BFMTV report, quotes Jennifer Wacrenier, communications lead at PEGI: there is "no legal obligation" and no "formal ban" stopping a retailer from selling an 18-rated game to a minor in France.

Rockstar's game, due November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, unsurprisingly gets the strictest rating. PEGI is a shared European system covering about forty countries, but its weight changes from one border to the next.

A label, not a law

According to 20 Minutes, the rating works as a ban in the United Kingdom or Ukraine. In France it depends on the point of sale, and the decision is the seller's. A shop manager quoted by BFMTV says there are "plenty of PEGI 18 games that are hard to justify", so the barrier does not carry the same weight from title to title. At Micromania, the leading specialist chain, staff cited by the same source describe no "established rules".

Online, a tighter filter

Digital stores are stricter. 20 Minutes says buyers must confirm their date of birth, and that Sony states a minor's PlayStation account cannot buy a PEGI 18 game, even with parental approval. For the Ultimate edition at €99.99, sold digitally only, the account is therefore the safeguard. The point about the digital route is ours: the article does not detail each platform's policy, and we have not checked Microsoft's.

What the source leaves out

The piece gives no figures: no count of minors affected, no data on actual shop practice. The testimonies are isolated. We will not know before November 19 how stores handle the rush, or whether some tighten their house rules. Rockstar has not commented.

The known facts stand: €79.99 for the standard edition, €99.99 for Ultimate, all on our price page.

Why it matters

Nothing changes for the game itself, but the reminder is useful weeks before a launch that will draw well beyond regulars. PEGI informs, it does not forbid: in a physical shop the seller decides, online the account does. As 20 Minutes concludes, it falls to parents to check what is on screen.
