Sony has rolled out QSSR, a free upscaling update for the original PS5. Whether GTA 6 will use it, neither Sony nor Rockstar has said.

Sony has pushed a system update that changes how the base PS5 looks, six weeks before GTA 6. According to SlashGear, it is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, it is already live on every console and costs players nothing.
The US site frames it as an answer to the original hardware's limits. The PS5 Pro has machine-learning upscaling, PSSR, which relies on dedicated hardware. The standard console lacks that chip. QSSR works around it by making better use of existing components rather than adding raw power.
Per SlashGear, the technique targets three known flaws: complex textures, shimmering of fine detail at sub-pixel level, and an image that can look unstable. It would also improve some ray-traced reflections. The aim is to bring the base PS5 closer to what the Pro does natively, without matching it. The outlet says the update landed on 1 October 2026, the day Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei came out.

Digital Foundry tested it, again according to SlashGear, and calls it an excellent boost, with one catch: a small performance cost in some games, small enough that some players may not notice. Studios already used to PSSR would adopt QSSR more easily, since the method is described as simpler to integrate.
The link to Rockstar is SlashGear's own hypothesis: Sony would have shipped this free update to prepare for the 19 November launch. We found no confirmation from Sony or Rockstar, and nothing says GTA 6 will use QSSR. In the sources we follow, no resolution or frame-rate figure has been given for the base PS5.
The same article recalls that pre-orders had already brought in around $500 million by mid-August 2026, a figure SlashGear gives without detail. For the rest, price, editions and pre-orders, everything is gathered on our release page.
For anyone on an original PS5, it is one less reason to worry about the gap with the Pro, though we still do not know how GTA 6 will run on that machine. Until Rockstar details its graphics modes, it is better to promise players nothing and wait for the first tests, from 19 November.
