Used PS5 Pro hits $1,300 at GameStop six weeks before GTA 6

GameStop lists a used PS5 Pro at $1,329.99, well above the $899.99 new model, which is out of stock. GTA 6 fever is reaching the hardware market.

GTA 6 arriving on November 19 does more than fill wish lists, it is already bending the console market. According to Collider, GameStop's PS5 Pro page shows a pre-owned unit at $1,329.99 next to $899.99 for a new one, marked unavailable. That is a $430 gap, roughly 48%.

A used console priced above a new one

That is the striking part: buying used no longer saves anything. Collider notes that the impatient buyer is mostly paying for the chance to own a console right now, not for a better machine. It also stresses that GameStop has not publicly tied the pricing to Rockstar's game. The GTA 6 link is a reading of the context, not a statement from the retailer.

Figures differ by source. JeuxVideo.com reproduces a post on X claiming GameStop moved its used PS5 Pro to $1,399.99, then $1,499.99, with this line attributed to the chain: "the preowned console will have a higher price than the new console - this is intentional". The French site also mentions third-party sellers going as high as 1,800 euros. Those prices have moved several times, so I am sticking with what Collider saw on the page.

Shortages, memory prices and speculation

JeuxVideo.com stacks several causes: an already high launch price, costlier components (it cites a rise of more than 170% in RAM prices over a year, driven by AI data centers), a shortage of the detachable disc drive for the PS5 Pro, which ships without one, and resale bots said to have swept up stock when pre-orders opened. Those are the site's explanations, not figures confirmed by Sony.

I have driven the Virus Bus through Vice City long enough to know the fever before a big departure. It makes you want to pay anything. That is exactly when to slow down.

Why it matters

Rockstar lists the standard PS5 as a supported platform, Collider reminds readers: the Pro is not required to play on November 19. The game costs 79.99 euros in its standard edition, as our prices and editions page details, and preloading opens on November 12. Better to hunt for a console at a normal price than to pay 48% extra for fear of missing day one. Rockstar has announced nothing about hardware; everything above comes from the market.
