GTA 6 branded "too woke": a fringe of players puts Lucia and Jason on trial

Retrospective: written in October 2026 from the sources of the time

Since the August 27 gameplay footage, some players have taken aim at the game's diversity and its heroine. BFM, citing Wired, lays out the criticism.

After the delays and the leaks, GTA 6 faces another wave: a trial for "wokeness". That is the finding of BFM, drawing on a Wired investigation: a fringe of male players judges the game "too woke", even "written by women". Frankly, this kind of debate lands on us with every trailer, and it should be looked at for what it is.

What these players object to

According to BFM, the complaints target the diversity of the trailers (women, Black or Hispanic characters, overweight people) and above all Lucia, the series' first playable heroine. The gameplay footage released on August 27, first on Netflix, provided fresh pretexts. A sequence where Lucia asks Jason to choose her outfit is called a "humiliation ritual for male players" by one X user. Others point to the words "sequins" and "cocktails", supposedly betraying Jason's "gay vibe", or to a scene where he appears shirtless. Another cannot get over Lucia always being first through a door, and some regret being unable to break up with her partner. BFM notes that these takes are echoed by French players and video makers.

An old reflex, for a satirical series

BFM recalls that none of this is new: Assassin's Creed Odyssey took sexist criticism in 2018 for letting players choose between Alexios and Kassandra. Grand Theft Auto has always been targeted for violence, vulgarity or nudity, even though it sets out as a satirical mirror of the modern world. These opinions come from online commentators; BFM gives no figures, and I cannot gauge their real weight. To our knowledge, Rockstar has not responded.

What we know since

The calendar has not moved: GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with preloading on November 12 and a PEGI 18 rating, with Lucia and Jason as the protagonist duo.

Why it matters

Not much for the game, more for the mood around the launch: two months out, every frame becomes ground for culture wars. On our site, the community remains the place to talk it through calmly.
