Target offers students and teachers 20% off GTA 6 preorders

Retrospective: written in October 2026 from the sources of the time

The US retailer drops the GTA 6 preorder from $79.99 to $63.99 for eligible shoppers. The offer has a deadline and a catch: the boxed edition is only a code.

A 20% discount on GTA 6 is not something you see every day, even if it only reaches a narrow audience. According to IGN, US chain Target is giving it to students and teachers in a "Back-to-School" offer: the preorder drops from $79.99 to $63.99, a saving of $16.

The terms

On paper the mechanism is simple. IGN explains that you sign up for free to Target Circle, verify your student or teacher status, then lock in your preorder before September 12. The discount applies to a single basket, so everything you want cheaper has to be added in one go. The same piece says Marvel's Wolverine falls to $55.99 under the same deal, and that the promotion also covers the Xbox version of GTA 6.

The catch

The IGN writer says it himself, and it is the part worth reading twice: preordering GTA 6 through an online retailer means receiving a boxed copy that holds a download code, with no disc inside. He calls it a "major point of controversy". The discount does not change that, it only makes the all-digital route a little cheaper.

For readers in Europe there is nothing to claim here: the reference price of the standard edition is 79.99 euros, and no equivalent student offer has been announced. The interest lies elsewhere. A major US retailer is already building a promotion around GTA 6 three months before release, which shows the game working as commercial bait before it is even out. Our price comparison tracks what retailers actually offer.

What we know since

The Target offer only ran until September 12. GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with preloading from November 12, a PEGI 18 rating, and prices of 79.99 euros for the standard edition and 99.99 euros for the Ultimate. No PC version has been announced.

Why it matters

Not much for most players, but the signal counts. The $80 price is no longer an untouchable ceiling: retailers can nibble at it with targeted offers. And the debate over the discless box will not vanish with a coupon.
