GTA 6: PS5 codes are region-locked, Xbox codes are not

Retrospective: written in October 2026 from the sources of the time

Rockstar has laid out the regions for GTA 6 codes on its site. On PS5 the account's country matters; on Xbox there is no restriction. In Japan, boxed codes expire.

One more page on the official site, and one detail that changes how you buy. In its "Platforms, Editions, and Versions" article, which GAMINGbible spotted through a post by Idle Sloth on X, Rockstar says PlayStation codes can only be redeemed by accounts registered in a specific set of countries. Xbox codes, it adds, are "not region-locked".

What Rockstar says

The split is finer than usual. According to GAMINGbible, the United States is no longer a single zone: Brazil, Latin America and North America are separated. Anyone who used to buy a cheaper code from another country can still do so on Xbox, not on PlayStation. For France, JeuxVideo.com notes that it sits in the EMEA zone, a shared pool with Germany, Italy, Spain or Australia: a code bought in a neighbouring European country works on a French account, a US or Asian one does not.

A box without a disc

The lock matters more because the "physical" version is no longer one. Per JeuxVideo.com, relying on Rockstar's support page, the box holds a download code and no disc. IGN France sums it up: you keep the plastic case, not the medium.

The Japanese case

The oddest point concerns Japan. IGN France writes that boxed codes there will expire 170 days after the launch date, in the name of financial protection. JeuxVideo.com reads it slightly differently: 170 days after the code is printed, with a cut-off of May 8, 2027 for a copy printed on release day, because of local law on digital goods. Both agree on the substance, but the start of the countdown is worded differently; only Rockstar's support page is authoritative.

What we know since

The November 19, 2026 date has not moved, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with preload on November 12. The price is €79.99 for the standard edition and €99.99 for Ultimate, the game is rated PEGI 18 and no PC version has been announced. Buying details are on our price page.

Why it matters

For most players nothing changes: you buy in your own country and redeem at home. For importers and collectors the gap is clear. On PS5 the account country decides, on Xbox the code travels, and the physical box is only packaging around a download. Edition details are on the release page.
