Rockstar hired writers just for what you hear while walking down the street. That comes from an interview with Love magazine, picked up by GamesRadar: Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, describes "an amazing team of writers and creatives" in charge of the "background noise" that brings the city to life.

According to GamesRadar, there is "a specific team of pedestrian dialogue writers in LA", then another of advertising and comedy writers spread across New York, LA and London. Humphries says the group comes from all kinds of backgrounds but shares "a desire to have a bit of fun with the ridiculousness of humans and the media". None of them see it as background: "It's all part of the tapestry of the game."

Why is Rockstar talking about pedestrians?

Because it is the series' signature: parody radio, billboards, ads and overheard chatter. James Horton, open world writing director, says the studio "dreamed a lot bigger this time around". Per GamesRadar, he wants you to catch "snatches of a hundred different conversations" while sprinting down the busiest street, and for any one of them to hold up if you stop to listen. His line: "No one you meet is an extra."

It fits what Rockstar said in the same issue about a more modest American dream, and with the stations and podcasts announced for the first time in the series: the satire runs through the soundscape as much as through the plot.

What should we take with caution?

These are intentions, not a playable result. The quotes come from a promotional interview, and Polygon files it under the campaign's "arty fashion magazines" phase, joking that the promise of every NPC being a distinct individual has been heard before. Whether the dialogue is good, varied and not repetitive after 40 hours cannot be judged before 19 November.

Why it matters

For anyone tracking the launch, nothing practical: no date, price or edition moves (launch details). But it hints at the scale of production: teams on three continents just for sidewalk talk and ads. On a Vice City street, it may be worth stopping to listen.
